Nippon Steel Coporation - Yawata Works

   Nippon Steel Corporation also referred to as Shinnittetsu, was formed in 1970. Nippon Steel Corporation is the world's second-largest steel producer in volume and the second most profitable steel company in the world. Nippon Steel was created by the merger of two giants, Yawata Iron & Steel (Yawata Seitetsu) and Fuji Iron & Steel (Fuji Seitetsu), into a juggernaut.

   Nippon Steel is raising its annual crude steel production capacity to more than 40 million metric tons and executing a strategy aimed at becoming a global player. Their objectives are to sustain growth and improve corporate value as the No. 1 global steelmaker focusing on medium-high grade steel. Nippon Steel continued to concentrate on capturing the high volume of demand for medium-high grade steel. In particular, they made large capital expenditures to increase production and shipping capabilities. Increasing their iron and steel making capacity was one objective of these expenditures. At the Nagoya Works, their completed a major project to improve integrated production capabilities by
expanding and upgrading the No. 1 blast furnace, building a new basic oxygen furnace, and implementing other measures to enhance production flows. At the Oita Works, they constructed the No. 5 coke oven, which is the first in the world to use the SCOPE21 next-generation coke production technology. Overall, their fiscal 2007 capital expenditures amounted to ¥310 billion, which was ¥40 billion more than in fiscal 2006.

    

Outline of Yawata Works

  The Yawata Works commenced operation as the government-owned Yawata Steel Works in 1901. Since that time it has consistently performed a leading role in Japan's steel industry. Particularly, in recent years, this steelworks has been performing an increasingly important role as a base for supplying medium-high grade steel to automobile factories in the Kyushu district, and also as a center for exporting steel to the Asian market.

  Establishment: 1901 (Commenced operation as the government-owned Yawata Steel Works.)

  Site area: 15,138,000 m²

   The Yawata Works, which is one of Nippon Steel Corporation's main steelmaking plants, manufactures a wide range of high function, high added value products, from bar steel, steel pipe, to various thin sheets.
